On October 25, 2024, PESACO brought its impactful cyberbullying awareness campaign to Mwenyeheri Anuarite Secondary School, located in the Mbezi area of Dar es Salaam. This session was attended by over 36 students from Forms I to IV, who took part in lively discussions about the prevalence and consequences of cyberbullying. The session also involved 4 teachers.
The session began with students discussing cyberbullying in groups and sharing their insights, which allowed PESACO to gauge their understanding. Advocate Catherine Oscar then gave an in-depth presentation on cyberbullying's forms, causes, impacts, and solutions, followed by Mr. Mfaume Hassan, who explained relevant legal protections. Social Welfare Officer Madam Agness provided advice for supporting victims, and Inspector of Police Judith Maimu outlined steps for handling incidents. Each segment included a Q&A, allowing students to engage with experts.
The session involved a comprehensive overview of cyberbullying and the devastating effects it can have on adolescents’ mental health and well-being. PESACO facilitators encouraged students to reflect on their own online behavior and consider how their actions could impact others. They were also given practical advice on how to protect themselves online, including the importance of being cautious with personal information and choosing friends and followers wisely.A particularly touching moment came when a Form IV student, spoke up about how she had recently experienced online harassment. “I used to ignore it, thinking it would stop, but after today’s talk, I realize that silence only encourages the behavior. I’m going to report it and take control of my online presence,” she said, inspiring many of her peers to do the same.Students were also introduced to local Child Helpline Support Number which is 116 for seeking assistance and reporting.PESACO extends its heartfelt thanks to Mwenyeheri Anuarite Secondary School for hosting this event and for the warm welcome and cooperation we received from both students and faculty. Your willingness to support this initiative ensures that your students are well-equipped to navigate the digital world safely and responsibly.
