On October 31, 2024, PESACO brought its cyberbullying awareness campaign to Ubungo Islamic High School, located in the Ubungo district in Dar es Salaam. This workshop gathered over 40 students and 4 teachers, where they participated in a dynamic, engaging session aimed at teaching them about the risks and consequences of cyberbullying.
The session began with students gathering in groups to discuss cyberbullying, later presenting their views to the larger audience. This opening activity helped assess their current knowledge and awareness of the issue. Advocate Catherine Oscar from PESACO then took the floor, delivering a detailed presentation to enhance and clarify the students' insights. She covered essential topics, such as the definition and various forms of cyberbullying, reasons it occurs, its potential impacts, and effective ways to address it. Following her talk, Mr. Mfaume Hassan provided an overview of the legal aspects of cyberbullying, helping students understand the legal protections available to them. Next, Social Welfare Officer Madam Jacqueline Mallya from Ubungo Municipality shared advice and strategies for supporting victims of cyberbullying.
The final segment was led by Inspector of Police Judith Maimu, who outlined practical steps for handling incidents of cyberbullying. Each session wrapped up with a Q&A, allowing students to connect with the experts and deepen their understanding. Many students confessed that they had seen or heard about others being harassed online, but didn’t know how to help.
During all sessions students were encouraged to be vigilant, kind, and proactive in combating cyberbullying. At the close of the session, both teachers and students committed to spreading the knowledge they had acquired. They promised to share these insights with other students through school clubs and morning assemblies, helping to maintain an ongoing conversation about cyber safety.
PESACO would like to extend a special thank you to the administration and staff of Ubungo Islamic High School for their collaboration in making this event possible. Your commitment to the safety and well-being of your students has made a significant impact. We look forward to continued collaboration in the future to ensure all students have a safe and supportive environment both online and offline.
